                                                                        Preface

For many years I have wanted to write up my family tree,

and, as the retirement years came and time permitted it, I

undertook this project.

I want to express my sincere thanks to all those people who

helped me fill in the places I didn’t know myself.

This family tree is complete as far as I was able to go.

Please forgive me for any mistakes I have made along the way!

If this family tree increases your knowledge of our families

and friends, and gives you pleasure, I am most satisfied.

                                                Sincerely,

                                                Arthur Wellington Sawler

Introduction of the Author

Born at home in Western Shore, on July 30, 1900, Arthur Wellington Sawler began his life.  He attended a

one-room school in Western Shore and then the new school which was built, which is the present Fire Hall.

Like most young men of his day, Arthur started working at an early age, and his first job was piling

heading at the Gold River Mill.  For his ten hour day he made 75 cents!

Arthur then began working at the French Cable Wharf in Dartmouth. At the time of the Halifax Explosion

in 1917, he was employed at Imperial Oil Company, Woodside.  Although buildings around him were badly

 damaged, Arthur escaped any injury.

Working in the woods also became an occupation and for several years

Arthur made barrels in the Annapolis Valley.

In 1923 Arthur married Susan Leone Kaizer.  Seven children came along

to complete their family and make their home happy and exciting.  Their

family has always taken priority in their lives and interest.

In 1939 Arthur went to Halifax to help work on boats.  These were

war years and times were hard.  After the war, Arthur came to Western

Shore and set up his own cooper shop.  Then he returned to Halifax to do

carpenter work at Brookfield Construction and National Sea Products, until

retirement.

For over thirty years Arthur served as a board member at the Pentecostal

Tabernacle, in Western Shore

As this was published, Arthur filled his time with basket weaving and riding his

bicycle around visiting friends.  In the summer he enjoyed berry picking and the work in his garden.

HISTORY OF THE SAWLER FAMILY

There isn’t much information available about the arrival of the Sawler family to this country, but what facts are available are immensely interesting.

The original name was Zeyler, then Seiler, then Sawler.

In 1752, the ship Gale arrived in Halifax and on the list of passengers was the handwritten name of Johann Heinrich Zeyler. He gave his age at 28 years and his occupation was a farmer. In 1752 many died on the voyage or after landing. They were persuaded to sell everything including their bedding and they had to lay on the bare decks or platforms and still destitute of all kinds of bedding, as written by Governor Hopson 16 October 1752.

He came from Palatinate. Palatinate was the name of two little countries of the old German empire. Johann Heinrich Zeyler’s name was listed again in 1752 along with the names of Johann Nicholas and Johann Heinrich. These were probably his sons. However, on that particular list his surname was spelled as Seiler. In 1753 he was allotted land on the Lahave River. Father Johann died 1757, in Lunenburg. (His wife was previously deceased, 1752, possibly on the voyage or in Halifax.) His sons were taken in by another family, as they would now be orphans.

In a list of people dating 1757, a John Henry Seiler is listed with the other children of Michael Hauptman. This was undoubtedly the family who took in the orphaned children. In 1760, in a registry of Town Lots, it is stated that Johann Henrich Zeyler was absent, and that his son was to have the lot instead. Another registry for 30-acre lots, dated the same year of 1760, states that the senior Johann Heinrich was dead, and his son was to have this land as well. Another source of information is the records of the Lutheran Church, where a Heinrich Seiler signed the membership roll in 1775, and his name appears in the account book from 1774-1785.

It is interesting to note that there are a few records of a Johann Michael Seiler around this same time. There is doubt about this name as he too was an orphaned child taken in by another family and there was a real possibility that his original name was changed, or partially changed by the family who raised him. Based on further research by Lewis Sawler at the Public Archives, N.S., Johann Nicholas and Johann Michael are presumed to be one and the same. Johann Michael was 10 when they left Germany. Johann Heinrich was 7.

Johann Heinrich Seiler, the orphan boy now grown up, had his name written as John Henry Seiler when he married Catherine Margaret Klettenberg (also written as Catherine Clattenberger) on January 12, 1773. They had seven sons, one of which was named (John)Frederick, and it is with this man that the family tree begins. They also had seven daughters.

John Frederick Seiler was born in 1786. He married Sarah Slagenweid (the original spelling on the records), in 1814. He died in 1858 at the age of 72 years.

Although many facts of the Sawler family history are nowhere to be found, many of the details have been passed down by word of mouth, through the generations. We do know that the family is of German ancestry and that they were one of the early settlers in the New World. Johann Heinrich Zeyler was here before the Acadians were expelled from Nova Scotia in 1755 and when the British captured the Fortress of Louisburg in 1758. In 1760 the Battle of Quebec was fought and General James Wolfe and the Marquis de Montcalm died. It was in 1760 that the French Governor surrendered the colony in its entirety over to Great Britain. Thus the Sawler ancestry shared in the formation of the Dominion of Canada since its early beginnings.

At the time of this writing in 1984 there are approximately 75 households in Canada who have the surname “Sawler”. This makes it very unique. It must be assumed, however, that distant relatives have their own rendition of the original Zeyler name. The majority of the Sawler families live in the Counties of Halifax and Lunenburg and in the Annapolis Valley, until this present year. Now, in 2004, there are 235 households listed in Canadian telephone listings with the name “Sawler”.
